McNary Dam and Nature Trail , Umatilla County, Oregon

Located just north of Highway 730 at Umatilla, Oregon, McNary Dam and Nature Trail is an accessible area with many trails and an observation tower.  This area is just below the Dam on Lake Umatilla.  This is good birding for gulls and loons. One should look for migrants and winter sparrows.  Rarities have included Ross' Gull and Harlequin Duck.

Cold Springs National Wildlife Refuge (NWR),  Umatilla County, Oregon

Cold Springs NWR is about 6 miles east of Hermiston; from Highway 395 in Hermiston take Highland Hills Road east, which turns into Loop Road. This area of marsh, sagebrush, grass and trees surrounds Cold Springs Reservoir.  Look for migrants.  Follow the road to the primative Boat Launch. Walk trail to water's edge to look for shorebirds, waterfowl, and American White Pelican.
